And (gravel cycling) is growing fast. In 2017, while the number of bikes shipped in the United States fell by 4 percent from the previous year, including losses for traditional mountain and road models, shipments of gravel bikes continued to grow, adding $26.9 million of new business—more than any other category.

One thing is certain: road cycling in the U.S. is overdue for new ideas. There’s promising growth in mountain biking, gravel, and adventure-style racing, but classic road-racing events are struggling to stay relevant. Prize money is shrinking; sponsors have been hard to retain. Williams and Legion, who competed in the “USA Crits” series this year, feel there’s potential to re-energize criteriums, frantic events that resemble Nascar on bikes, and can be held in a compact downtown course, even at night.

When I first got into cycling, it was actually through triathlon. Having no previous experience in any endurance sport, I jumped in head first with a crash course on everything.

Having consumed every magazine and YouTube channel out there, I knew who the pros where. So at my 2nd or 3rd race, when Chris McCormack (2x Ironman World Champion) showed up, I was beyond thrilled to be racing on the same course at the same time with him.

In the years since then, as I gravitated towards just cycling, I’ve missed that immediate connection with pro and elite athletes. But, I think that is changing now. And Fast Circles is going to help change it.
